Reports
It has been an honour to serve as president
of the Chilliwack Curling Club over the last year. There have been many
significant events occurring over the year – mainly related to planning for the
new curling building – and I hope that the coming year proves to be just as
exciting.
I would like to thank my fellow board
members and all the members who have volunteered the time and labour over the year – the ladies in the kitchen,
the volunteer bartenders, clinical/junior instructors, 50/50 sellers. I would like
to thank the outgoing board members including Gary Roberts for his service over
the last six years. He is dropping off the board, but is remaining on several
committees. The other three outgoing members have agreed to let their names
stand for re-election.
I would also like to thank the staff, led
by Bruce and James, for their efforts over the year. Their dedication and work
ethic are much appreciated.
The CCC is a strong club, mainly due to
these people. Remember, this is a club. And a club is only as good as the
effort that its members put into that club.
Frank Jamieson Memorial Bursary awarded to Kathlyn Jarvis
John Roberts Memorial Bursary awarded to
Cailin Cooke.
Number of Teams. We had more individual
curlers this year but a slight decrease in the number of teams in the night
leagues – 370 curlers on 120 teams in our night leagues compared to 368
curlers 122 teams the year before. The number of teams in the Tuesday Men's
League dropped; we bumped the Competitive League up to 14 teams to compensate;
the Wednesday Night Open League ended up with 24 teams, eventually; The Monday
Dinner League started with a full slate of 12 but dropped to 11 after
Christmas; the Thursday Leagues stayed steady with 13 teams in the Ladies'
Dinner and 22 teams in the Men's; and finally we had 13 teams in the Friday
Social League .
There were 81 teams in the 1st half of the day leagues
and 74 teams in the 2nd half compared to 86 and 74 teams the year before.
Although these day leagues are not officially part of our club – they have
their own organizational structures – they do have an impact on our revenue
stream and snack bar operation. We should continue do everything we can to help
them to increase their numbers and to operate smoothly.
In all, we have 575 active curlers in our club. This
is a slight decrease compared to the 579 curlers we had last year.

Many
thanks to everyone who helped make our leagues and bonspiels a success this
past year!
Another successful 3 day Clinic was held in
September. Thank you to Rick &
Doreen Jones for leading this along with many volunteers. We also had success with running a program
through Elder College and plan to do this again in the next season.
Our recruitment efforts over the past
season have included the Member-Recruit-a-Member Program, a full page ad in the
Winter Chilliwack Leisure Guide, an Open House at the beginning of the season,
the Learn to Curl clinic, and the new teaching program
through the Elder College at UFV.
The Elder College program has been a big
success and has been an effective way to bring in new curlers to our day
leagues. We look to expand the program and make it even better for the
following season.
Our two year Member-Recruit-a-Member
program was a success and we continue to see new curlers joining our night
leagues. We will continue to offer a $25 club buck referral fee to any existing
members that bring in new members.
For the following season, we will be
looking into the possibility of Drop-In Nights or a 6-8 week long league. There
may be some appeal to new curlers looking to get out on the ice but not willing
to make a half-year commitment before trying the game.
On the retention side of things, we will be
conducting a year-end survey to get feedback on the season and the club in
general. The board will use this feedback as we continue to plan for the
upcoming season. Look for the survey to come to your email inboxes in the
coming weeks.
We continue to urge all of our members to
bring their “non-curling” friends down to the club and introduce them to our
wonderful game. It is important that we continue to maintain a strong membership
base and word-of-mouth is truly the best form of advertising.
If anyone has any other ideas for
membership recruitment, please do not hesitate to contact myself or anyone
other member of the board.
First thing on the social committee report
was the golf tournament last year at Kinkora Golf Course where the winners were
each given engraved glassware. It was a great success, we sold out early. Also,
we had the top dog contest in October and out of 34 players seeking for the
infamous parking spot and one night’s league refund, the winner was Kevin
Goosen followed by Ugene Dennis and third Mike Walters. On October 30 we hosted
a Halloween party with Mike Walters as a DJ and prizes for best costumes. It
turned out to be a great night. A big thank you to all volunteers and staff
that helped out during the year without you guys it
would not be possible to hold these events.
We
had fewer students and fewer instructors this year. Donna Allen continues to do an excellent job
coordinating our Little Rockers. Thanks
to Lisa Deputan, Doug Marshall and all our members who help out with this
program. These are our future members. Joanne Kern has taken on the Rocks n’ Rings
position with Curl BC and is representing our club as well throughout the
Fraser Valley Elementary Schools. Wendi
Prinse & Joanne have put together a new brochure to be handed out to our
Chilliwack Schools to encourage them to come out and curl in our Junior
Program.
The New Building Committee was established
this year to represent the interests of the Chilliwack Curling Club during the
development and construction of the new curling facility being built by the
City of Chilliwack. Although the new building is a city project, being built
with city funds on city land, they have sought our input from the beginning of
the endeavour and plan to include us throughout the process.
Although we do not know what the final
building will look like at this time, the final result is expected to use
state-of-the-art ice-making technology and include a full commercial kitchen,
as well as features similar to those we have now but bigger. For example, a
larger dining area, locker rooms with more lockers, etc. In addition, we are
hoping there will be enough funding for eight sheets of ice instead of the six
we have now.
One of the more pleasant announcements this
year was that the completion date has been moved up to the Fall
of 2018 instead of early to mid 2019. This will allow us to curl in the new
building one year earlier than originally thought.
Suggestions from the
membership has been
encouraged from the beginning of the process. Please visit the web site if you
would like more information or would like to make a suggestion.
