President’s Remarks: Larry Legault
It has been an honour to serve as president
of the Chilliwack Curling Club over the last two years. It has been a
wonderful, but tiring, experience The 2010 Olympics resulted in a tremendous
amount of exposure for the sport of curling and we, as a club, were able to
capitalize on this interest. Our membership increased over 13% this year while
other clubs in the Lower Mainland have continued to struggle. We should be
proud of our club’s continued success.
I would like to thank my fellow board
members and all the members who have volunteered the time and labour
over the year – the ladies in the kitchen, the volunteer bartenders, clinical/junior
instructors, 50/50 sellers, and the work parties. I would like to thank the
outgoing members of the Board for their contributions – Peter Lui, Jane Arden,
Lenneke Bowles, Darryle Leavesley, and Chris Godwin. I would like to thank the
staff, led by Bruce, for their efforts over the year.
Financial Report:
Keith Britz presented the
financial report on behalf of Meyers, Norris & Penny.
Copies were given out to
members for review.
Motion:
Moved by Wayne McAlpine
seconded by Russ Knutson
That the financial report
be adopted as reviewed. Carried
Question concerning how long
City of Chilliwack is going to let us operate at this location.
There are 2 years left on our
lease.
Manager’s Report: Bruce Renwick
The club had another very successful
year with most leagues up and new leagues started with interest in new leagues
for next season. We definitely
capitalized on some of the Olympic interest and we ran a “Learn to Curl”
session on Sunday evening which morphed into a full draw after Christmas. To the members, who gave up their Sunday
nights to help the club a big thank you. We issued just under $4000.00 in club
bucks this season which translates to just under 2000 volunteer hours from
March of last year until the beginning of March this year. This commitment by members helps us keep our
costs under control.
We hosted the PCMCA/BCIMCA
Provincial championships and the Master’s under the guidance of chair Larry
Sigurdson we showed once again that Chilliwack Curling Club hosts nothing but
first class events. Although we aren’t
scheduled for any events for next season, we have been asked by CurlBC to host
the Ladies’ play downs the first week of Dec. (still needs Board discussion).
The Pro Shop had another good
year with sales now approaching the $30,000.00 mark. With all the new curlers and all the club bucks we should see
this number rise. Goldline products
were tried this year and were well received so we will expand their line with
some higher end shoes as well as those knick knacks for Christmas and Birthdays
for that curler on your list. The bar
also had a good year with the curlers having fun as well as a couple of
darters. There are not many in the
industry that can boast that their sales were the same after the change in the
drinking and driving laws. This was
achieved by more people drinking fewer drinks which overall balanced out to the
same numbers as last season. This shows
that it is becoming more and more the place to come and have a few drinks with
your friends even on the nights you don’t curl. We are working on adding a night menu to the bar for next season
which hopefully will result in an increase over last season’s sales
By making it more attractive
to stick around and socialize.
We have a number of rentals
this summer. There is quite a few more
than last summer which was quite quiet.
There are no major projects planned for maintenance this summer. A few minor fix ups to be done so will be
holding a couple of work bees thru the summer.
Keep your eyes peeled for the emails and come out and give a couple
hours of your time.
I would like to thank a few
people that have done things that may not get recognized, all the volunteers
that come out to support your club whenever and for whatever you are needed
for. You only get back what you give in
anything in life. Thanks to Glen Ford
for opening the club on Sundays for practice ice also Peter Lui for helping
build a strong junior program which is the foundation of our future and Jane
Arden and Lenneke Bowles for their countless hours as Secretary and Treasurer
and all Board members for their time doing club activities.
And last our outgoing
president Larry Legault for all the many, many hours he puts in around here
doing the website, setting up the POS system, Bonspiels, Building and
Maintenance etc…by far the most enthusiastic and hard working president the
club has had in a while. He has
definitely set the bar pretty high for the next president.
We had the pleasure of
playing on some of the best ice in all of BC last season. Extra time and wages were spent on the cold
side of the glass. During Dave’s well
deserved days off, Mark Guthrie was trained to do the scraping and put many
hours in hot mopping in order to keep the ice clean. As well Kris and Lou washed and cleaned the home ends each
night. Unfortunately Dave has decided
to move back to Ont. to work for next season.
We have hired a young man from Prince Albert, Sask. Named James Michayluk
to make our ice for next season. He is
really looking forward to coming to our club and has family ties in the
area. I look forward to working with
him and I’m sure you will all welcome him to the club. The staff on this side of the glass will
remain the same.
