Manager’s report: Bruce
Renwick
The club had another very busy year. Some leagues were down a bit this season and
some up but overall about the same. We
all need to encourage new people to take up our game and join our club in order
to keep our club strong and financially viable.
We are going to try some new leagues and new ideas
next season and hope to utilize more of the free ice time. During the year we had some trying times
with the ice and rock issues. I think
with due diligence and great patience this matter has been addressed by the
board of directors. Ed Gilchrist will
be making our ice next season and I look forward to working with Ed and I am
sure he will be welcomed into the club by all members.
The club hosted 10 bonspiels as well as ICBC this past
season, along with 15 private functions on the ice or in the lounge.
We put through 24 classes of elementary school kids
with over 500 kids getting a chance to curl during this time. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped
with these classes.
Proshop sales were down a bit, but sales seem to be
cyclical and we hosted less out of town people this past season. I have ordered
in some new clothing for the next year and it will be ready for the start of
the season.
Bar sales were down over last year. No visits from the Scots or firefighters.
Post-dated cheques due by August 15th to
hold your spot from last year.
Encourage your friends to come out and try the clinic
at the start of the season.
Join the new Sunday night beginners league or split
your team and let them join some experienced curlers.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Advertising & Publicity: Jane Adam, Lynne Wejr
On ice advertisers are contacted during the summer in
regards to renewing their advertising spots.
Invoices were sent out to all and payable to the office. The same for the larger signs on the west
wall of club.
Building & Maintenance: Dennis Sherwin, Jamie Newton,
Larry Legault
The committee has been kept fairly busy over the past
season.
The year started with a general clean up and paint
touch up in Sept.
The flat roof at the front of our building was
replaced.
Clean up of old tables and chairs took place in Oct.
with new tables and chairs being bought.
Fluorescent lighting was installed in the upstairs
area.
Repairs were made to vandalized area on the west side
upper stairway.
Plans are in place to build the new equipment room at
the back of the building.
The scoreboards will be moved closer to wall to clear
up the back walkway.
We will be looking for ways to minimize damage done to
front doors and windows due to vandalism.
Draws and Bonspiels:
Both draws for the day and night leagues went
smoothly. Thanks to those responsible
for the daytime draws and to our club manager, Bruce Renwick for his work in
doing the evening draws. We did have
some empty spots on Monday and Friday nights.
Hopefully we can attract some more teams to fill those leagues.
There were a number of bonspiels held throughout the
year on weekdays. Thanks to the various
Senior/Master Mens, Ladies, and Mixed League Committees that organized those
events. Thanks also to the Business
Girls Committee for running the Chili Spiel.
They all do a great job every year and it is appreciated.
We also hosted a number of closed spiels that Bruce
coordinated with great success.
Our club bonspiels were very successful – both on and
off the ice. We had a Fall Fun Spiel
for the first time in a couple of years.
16 teams participated and had a lot of fun.
We had 37 teams in the Mens and 32 teams in the Mixed
Spiel. A small profit was made on these
events.
Social:
Golf Tournament to be held June 1st at
Aquadel, 100+ have signed up to play.
A Turkey Shoot was held Dec. 14th. 41 participated.
Glen Ford is Top Dog.
Junior Curling & Clinics: Laura Watson, Jane Adam
The Junior Curling program at the CCC had another
successful season. There were many new
young curlers enrolled in the Monday afternoon league.
The Little Rockers were about 20 in number. Mondays
from 3:30-4:30.
More volunteer help would be an asset.
The 4:30-6:30 session attracted about 50 young
curlers.
To help promote junior curling, two clinics were
held. 25 participated in a two day
learn to curl clinic for new curlers.
12 people attended an Introduction to Coaching clinic.
The Al Seanor Memorial Bonspiel was held on January 19th. We are considering opening this bonspiel up
to other juniors from other clubs in the Fraser Valley.
Teams from CCC were entered in the Juvenile playdowns,
it was a great experience for these young curlers.
Chilliwack and Sardis Secondary schools entered boys
and girls teams in the Fraser Valley High School Playdowns. These teams met each other in the final,
with Chilliwack winning both divisions.
They competed in the High School Provincial Championships with the boys
team, coached by Bruce Renwick, placing 7th. The girl’s team, coached by Laura Watson,
placed third. Lisa Deputan coached the
Sardis teams.
In the 2008/09 season we hope to have teams registered
for Juvenile and Junior playdowns.
More volunteers to help us with various aspects of the
Junior program would be
Great.
Finance and Funding Committee:
Thanks to Lenneke Bowles and Larry Simpson for their
hours of work in the successful application of grants.
Ice Committee: Larry Simpson
Thank you to the members who were on this committee
for their efforts to help the ice maker in dealing with the ice
conditions. Thanks to Bruce Renwick for
his efforts and the long hours he put in dealing with this issue.
We purchased a new Thomson ice machine but
unfortunately we have had problems with the blade throughout the year.
BJ Gagnon held an ice technicians course at the
curling club at the beginning of the season and they put our ice in for
us. We had hoped this would eliminate our
problems but this was not the case. We
have problems with our water pressure and the airflow.
Late fall we have our rocks conditioned.
Ed Gilchrist has been hired as our icemaker for the
upcoming season.
Thanks to Danny Malleri for his years of service as
our icemaker.
President’s Remarks: Dick Allan
It can be said that the CCC remains in good
shape. While many clubs within our
region are experiencing both financial and membership problems, our club is
fortunate in that we are not. Overall our
leagues are healthy and active. We
should all do as much as we can to encourage and promote curling at all age
levels.
The reason for our success year after year has been
and continues to be the dedication and work of our volunteers and our
staff. The senior ladies in the
kitchen, the bartenders, and the curlers who help with the juniors and school
children, the bonspiel crew and the Board of Directors, all give their time and
effort to make our club a “good club”.
The staff our Manager, Ice maker and custodians all contribute their
expertise and skills to help make our club what it is today.
There are too many people to thank but thank you to
all of the Board members for their support and their help by serving on various
committees. Much of their work is done
behind the scenes and they deserve a lot of credit for both the time and effort
they give. To those Board members who
will be leaving us this year, thank you for your service and for a job well
done.
We can all be proud of the accomplishments of our
teams who represented our club and zone in Provincial championships.
Other accomplishments this year include the successful
application of a grant to the Gaming Commission for roof repair, the purchase
of a new scraper new furniture and a TV for the upstairs lounge and a revised
and updated Constitution and Bylaws.
Challenges for next year would include improving
security for our building, getting more people to fill some of our night
leagues, to provide good ice conditions all year round and to continue our
efforts to make curling enjoyable for all our members.
I have enjoyed serving on the Board as President and
working with Bruce Renwick this past year.
We have faced a number of challenges this year and will continue to face
more next year. I am confident that the
Board and the Manager will continue to deal with them in an efficient and
effective manner.
