Strategic Plan
2009-2014

Background & Introduction

History of the Chilliwack Curling Club (CCC)

The Chilliwack Curling Club was formed in 1952 with members traveling to the Vancouver Curling Club to curl. In 1954 the four sheet club was built with the help of the members and soldiers from CFB Chilliwack. In 1961 the club was expanded to its present six sheet status, although some sheets are narrower than actual competition width. In 1988 the club expanded its building again adding locker rooms, pro shop/office area and enlarged kitchen and eating area as well as increasing the lounge area, meeting room and dance floor on the second floor. During this addition the club also became wheelchair friendly with a ramp, elevator and handicap washroom. CCC presently has 578 active members and a membership trend that is stable. The club operates at approx. 80% capacity and this has remained stable for several years. The club has received support for operating costs from BC Lottery Corp in recent years from Capital Grant Application Proceeds. CCC has a Masters League (seniors) and Ladies League, which are strong and continue to be a solid base for the club.

Context for the Strategic Plan

Although some clubs are doing quite well, many are experiencing declines in participation, revenue and morale. The Business of Curling Program has been established to address these issues and encourage continuous improvement among clubs across the country.

In 2008, Club President Dick Allan initiated discussion among the Board of Directors about Strategic Planning for the curling rink to discuss the marketing of our sport, and our sport facilities. The Canadian Curling Association offered assistance with strategic planning sessions with Jack Bowman (Business of Curling Facilitator & CCA Director 2006-2011) as facilitator. The Chilliwack Curling Club’s Board of Directors agreed that strategic planning would be valuable for the club. In October, 2008 on a Saturday and Sunday there was a strategic planning session which included 5 people from the Board of Directors of CCC and 5 Club Members (non-board Members) for a total of 10 participants, plus Mr. Bowman as Facilitator.

Some of the concepts in the document were developed by the entire group while others came from individuals or sub-teams. The Strategic Planning Team circulated the first draft for review and incorporated suggestions into this plan that was approved by the CCC Board of Directors at their March 2009 meeting.
